Get ready, racing fans! The Dirt Track World Championship (DTWC) is heading back to West Virginia in 2026, promising a thrilling experience for everyone involved. After a long hiatus, the 46th annual DTWC will roar back to life at the West Virginia Motor Speedway (WVMS) in Mineral Wells. This marks a significant return, as the track hasn't hosted this prestigious event since 2010!
This exciting news was unveiled by race promoter Carl Short during the opening ceremonies of the 45th DTWC at Eldora Speedway, which has been the host from 2023 to 2025.
The driving force behind this move? WVMS's new owner, Mike Hurley. Short shared that Hurley is incredibly eager to bring the crown jewel event back to the track. WVMS previously hosted the DTWC in 1999 and 2000. Short himself founded the DTWC back in 1981 at Pennsboro (W.Va.) Speedway, which held the race a remarkable 19 times. While Short acknowledges he'll miss hosting at Eldora, he believes this shift is the best outcome for everyone.
But here's where it gets interesting: even though Eldora won't host the DTWC next season, the Lucas Oil Series will still be a part of their schedule. Track General Manager Levi Jones announced a doubleheader on October 9-10 during the Big River Steel Chase for the Championship. Details about the programs, including the potential for a $10,000 and a $50,000 prize, will be released later.
Jones expressed his enthusiasm, stating that Eldora is proud to continue its association with such a unique and exciting championship.
